Mass Transit System Developed by Local Company Could Help Cities Deal with Traffic

By David Winter, WKRC  •  January 17, 2020  •  Local 12 / WKRC Cincinnati

A wingless air transportation system developed by a local company could help major cities deal with traffic congestion. The AirTrac system can be built over an existing highway, carrying long train-like cars that hang from a rail — capable of transporting both people and cargo.

Gene Timperman, an aeronautical engineer and physicist based in Springfield Township, conceived AirTrac. The wingless planes are designed to suspend from overhead tracks and travel at 200 miles per hour — an idea born in his garage that now boasts more than 100 patents, many involving air cushion technology. That same concept levitates AirTrac's guides along its tracks, providing minimal friction and allowing electric fan propulsion motors to expend very little energy.

The economics are compelling. A 2017 Kentucky Transportation Cabinet study outlined several highway improvements — one of which is 12 years out and projected to cost $5.3 billion. By contrast, Gene estimates that an AirTrac line running from Kings Island to CVG would cost approximately $800 million.

"I think we could have one up and running in five, six years time."

— Gene Timperman, AirTrac founder

With Amazon's new hub at CVG, anticipated DHL expansion, and other incoming projects, the Tri-State's need for transportation alternatives has become nearly imperative. AirTrac faces competition from high-profile concepts like Virgin's Hyperloop One and the Superconducting Maglev already running in Asia at over 300 mph — but the AirTrac team argues cost and versatility are on its side.

"We are on the cusp of a sea-change in transportation technology."

— Sherman Couch, AirTrac

One key advantage: AirTrac can run directly down the center of existing highways and over current interchanges with minimal disruption. The company says it is ready to begin a full engineering design study as soon as it secures funding, and has hosted transportation leadership forums with local business and political leaders to begin weaving AirTrac into Greater Cincinnati's long-range transportation conversation.
